Electrolytes
Electrolytes are critically important in regulating blood pressure and volume, allowing proper muscle and nerve function and maintaining fluid balance. All are essential to high performance especially in warmer temperatures.
When exercising in the heat, sweat output often exceeds water intake, resulting in a body water deficit (hypohydration) and electrolyte losses. Electrolytes must be present in proper concentrations to maintain the aforementioned functions. When an athlete sweats, they lose electrolytes primarily in the form of sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl-). One should therefore replace the electrolytes as well as the fluids. Potassium (K+), magnesium (Mg2+), and calcium (Ca2+) are electrolytes also lost through sweating.
It's going to be a hot one this weekend, so replenish your electrolytes and hydrate well out there.
