Training Amidst Wildfires

As much as you want to get your miles in training outdoors amidst wildfire smoke poses significant health risks due to the inhalation of particulate matter (PM) and harmful chemicals. Fine PM, such as PM2.5, penetrates deep into the respiratory system, causing oxidative stress, inflammation, and impairing lung function. Smoke also contains hazardous air pollutants like volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), linked to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Exposure to these pollutants during exercise can exacerbate respiratory symptoms and reduce exercise capacity. Furthermore, high levels of air pollutants can disrupt thermoregulation, potentially increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. To mitigate health risks, in addition to checking the temperature, make it a habit to monitor air quality indices and consider indoor training alternatives during wildfire events.
