Self-Myofascial Release

Range of motion is regulated by proper extensibility of soft tissues encompassing a joint. Inadequate extensibility will impair performance including failing to clear a hurdle, catch a pass, avoid an obstacle, deceive a defender, etc. One technique to avoid tissue shortcomings is myofascial release. This practice may reduce restrictions or adhesions within layers of fascial tissue. Self-myofascial release (SMR) using tools such as foam rollers may greatly improve a tissues’ extensibility and, hence restoring its elasticity.

Explanatory mechanisms for such improvements include a rebound of water, lymphatic and vascular activity once compression is removed. Whether it be water, lymphatic or blood flow, the removal of metabolites from and/or oxygen and nutrients into the tissue, the result may importantly leave you in a better state to perform.

Even a single application of SMR may improve performance (Sulowska-Daszyk & Skiba, 2022), so why wait? Get rolling!

Athletic Wise has new high-density foam rollers in stock in our shop.
