Rear in Gear
The glutei are frequently the butt-end of jokes however the power producing potential of these muscles is no laughing matter. In particular, the gluteus medius (GMed) and the gluteus maximus (GMax) are key muscles contributing to pelvic stability and lower extremity function. When lacking activation and strength these muscles may be implicated in disorders of the pelvis, knee, and hip. Weakness in hip extension, external rotation and abduction, primary functions of the GMed and GMax, put athletes at risk of injuries e.g. anterior cruciate ligament tears and hamstring and groin pulls.
In a recent review in the Journal of Experimental Orthopaedics the authors highlight the importance of glute strength influencing mechanics in activities such as walking, running and squats (Rinaldi et al., 2022). So, if you haven’t already, get your rear in gear and incorporate glute work in your training!
