Osteoarthritis in Running

If the worry about an accelerated onset of osteoarthritis is holding you back from running a recent systematic review published in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Review may quell your fears. The authors gathered data on 963 runners (6674 joints) and 2038 nonrunners (mean age 59.4 +/12.7 years). Authors found the middle-aged runners did not present with greater imaging or clinical signs of osteoarthritis than the nonrunner controls. Of note, level of expertise, i.e., recreational or elite level, did not increase the rate of osteoarthritis progression in those >50 years of age (Migliorini et al., 2022).
